She was born November 29, 1924 in Rutherford County, NC, second of four children of John Herbert Weir and Fannie Trout Weir. She grew up in Shelby, NC and graduated from Shelby High School in 1941. She moved to Charlotte, NC in 1942 where she met and married Bland Clontz in 1944.
Viola was employed in the Transportation Industry for 30 years, working for McLean Trucking Co., Silver Fleet Motor Express, Lowther Trucking Company, Bell Lines, Inc., and Smith Transfer Co. She was a Charter Member of Charlotte Women’s Traffic & Transportation Club and was a representative of the club in conferences in Boston, Mass., Baltimore, MD, and Winston Salem, NC.
She was a long-time member of Avondale Presbyterian Church, an Elder, member of Aitkin Sunday School Class, Bridge-Builders Circle and the Bunko Women’s Mission Group. She was also a member of Park Road Baptist V.S.P. Seniors and St. Andrews Methodist Harvesters Seniors.
She loved to read, dance and travel. She toured all of the US States, all of Canadian Provinces and forty foreign countries on six continents.
Viola is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Bland Clontz; son, Johnny Bland Clontz; and brother, William Herbert Weir.
She is survived by her sister Sue Weir Dixon, of Texas; niece, Amy Clontz Robinson and numerous nieces and nephews in North Carolina and Texas.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Sharon Memorial Park with Rev. Jim Ewing officiating.
