

Dr. Walter Arthur Carney, 90, of Charlotte left his earthly home, surrounded by his loving wife and family, and was promoted to his heavenly home on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. He was born on September 12, 1925 in New Paris, PA to Vernon J. and Bertha (Cunningham) Carney.
Walter graduated from Ramsey H.S. in Mt. Pleasant, PA. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. Upon completion of Gunnery School, he became a ball turret gunner and was stationed in Kettering, England. On April 25, 1945 the young staff sergeant’s B-17 was shot down over Tachov, Austria where he became a prisoner of war.
After his honorable discharge, he enrolled in the Robert Morris School of Business which led to a successful painting/interior decorating venture-Carney & Miller.
On April 18, 1957, Walter asked Jesus Christ to be his personal Savior. Shortly thereafter, he was called into the ministry which spanned 50 years and 4 churches. Upon retirement, he and his wife Ruth were active members of Bible Baptist Church in Matthews, NC.
Survivors include his wife Ruth of 70 years; two sons, Donald (Carolyn) Carney of Mexico and David (Diane) Carney of Vincent, OH; two daughters, Carol (David) Knepshield of Little Hocking, OH and Verna (Gary) Clark of Indian Trail, NC; one daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Bill) Morris of Belpre, OH.
He is also survived by his 17 grandchildren: Julia, Jeffrey, Jill, Jennifer, Janice, Joel, James, Joanna, John, Misty, Jeremy, Cory, Holly, Shelley, Heather, Stephanie, Rachel and 40 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William; grandson, Stephen; and his brothers Jay, Leroy, Clarence and Paul.
Over his lifetime, Walter received numerous awards for his spiritual, military, and personal accomplishments. He will be remembered as a faithful husband, provider, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, pastor and friend. He left behind a treasured legacy in his commitment to God, family, and country. We will miss him dearly as he joins the hundreds of people in heaven whom he has led to the Lord.
A visitation with the family will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Rd. Mint Hill NC, 28273. An additional visitation will be also be held at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 4 at Bible Baptist Church, 2724 Margaret Wallace Rd, Matthews, NC 28105. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill with Military Honors.
