

William (Bill) Victor Berry, of Indian Trail, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family under hospice care at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center on January 20, 2017 after a long courageous battle with brain cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, JoLayne, daughter Caroline (Brian) and son William (Tiffany). Bill, as he was known to friends and family, was born in Annville, Pennsylvania on November 1, 1945, to William U. and Lois A. Berry. He grew up in the area until he moved to North Carolina in 1963 to pursue a teaching degree at Catawba College.
After graduation, he went on to teach for 39 years in the Charlotte area schools including, Long Creek Elementary, Selwyn Elementary, Elizabeth Traditional Elementary and Charlotte Christian School. While teaching, he earned a Master’s Degree in Education at UNCC in 1979. He also taught history to ESL adults at CPCC who were working towards their citizenship.
In retirement, he spent his time volunteering at Novant Matthews Hospital and with programs dedicated to improving Adult Literacy in Union County. Bill was an active member of Blair Road United Methodist Church, not only as a Sunday school teacher, but also participating in the choir and on various committees. In his free time he enjoyed traveling, reading, listening to music, watching sports, walking his dogs and spending time with his family. Bill was assured of his salvation through his beliefs and life long walk with Christ.
A Life Celebration will be held Sunday, January 29 at Blair Road United Methodist Church in Mint Hill, NC with visitation starting at 2pm and a service starting at 3:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice dedicated to the elimination of cancers.
