Wilton "Hans" Paul Abel

November 9, 1942January 11, 2021

Wilton “Hans” Paul Abel, age 78, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2021 in Charlotte, NC. He was the only child of the late Paul and Anna Abel of Riesel, TX. Wilton was born on November 9, 1942 in Riesel, TX. He served in the United States Air Force and later graduated from Baylor University in Waco, TX. In his professional life, he worked for himself as a custom woodworker and had a gift for making original design fine furniture. Wilton also had a talent for photography and making things grow. Many of his family fondly referred to him as “the artiste.” Wilton loved being outdoors in his vegetable garden and watching for his cardinals and hummingbirds to come for a visit. In his 40s, he felt called to attend the Chapel for the Deaf Lutheran Church and taught himself sign language so that he could participate in services. A man of many talents, he liked a simple life – a good newspaper, interesting conversation, a home in the country, and a solid faith in the Lord. He was loved by more people than he knew and will be missed greatly for his humor, candor, and beautiful work. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Abel of Indian Trail, NC; his daughter, Melinda Woodbury, son-in-law, Trace Woodbury, and granddaughter, Ava Grace Woodbury all of Richmond, VA. His son, Paul Erick Abel, preceded him in death.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:30am at Forest Lawn East Cemetery 3700 Forest Lawn Drive Matthews, North Carolina 28104.

My deepest condolences to the Able family. Although I didn’t know Mr Able personally I know his sweet daughter Melinda. He must have been an amazing, upstanding man to have raised such an outstanding woman like Melinda. Believing that Wilton is walking the streets of gold and praising our Lord. May the peace of Jesus fill your hearts and minds.

Wilton was a customer and friend of mine for many years. I know he is already in one of God's work shops continuing his creations.

Gene and I send our sympathy to each of you at the loss of your loved one. I have many wonderful memories of growing up with Wilton as we only lived a mile from each other, went to school and church together, and were often together every day while growing up. We rode our bikes to school together, later rode the school bus together, worked in the fields together, and of course enjoyed our mothers' wonderful cooking. Our family does have several pieces of Wilton's woodwork in our homes-beautiful work! Even have 2 wooden watermelon slices. Prayers for Jesus to give you His peace and strength in the days ahead.

Saddened to hear of Wilton's passing, but I know he has joined the church triumphant! I own a piece of his handiwork and think of him every time I look at it. Prayers of comfort for his family.
