Alan Merle Cohen died on August 17, 2026, in Los Angeles, California. He was 86.
He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and raised across the state line in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the son of Harold Cohen and Evelyn Gurss. His father died in November 1955, while Alan was still in high school. An avid baseball player who took the mound as a pitcher in his youth, he remained a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and later the California Angels. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1957, spent two years at Penn State, and transferred to the University of Miami in Florida, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1961.
That October he married Harriett Whiteman in Los Angeles. They had two children, Tod, born in 1963, and Lisa, born in 1966.
Alan spent his career in insurance. He started at Fireman's Fund as an underwriter, and after the family moved to Salt Lake City in 1967, he became a broker with the J.J. Weinstock Agency. He and Harriett returned to Los Angeles in 1981, to the city where they had married. He was a golfer all his life, proudly achieving every player's dream: a hole-in-one at Jeremy Ranch in Park City, Utah.
He is survived by his wife, Harriett Cohen; his son, Tod Cohen, and daughter-in-law, Stacy Mason; his daughter, Lisa Cohen-Fogel, and son-in-law, Tony Fogel; his grandchildren, Max Cohen, Eliza Cohen, Gabriel Cohen, Sarah Grindlay, Giles Grindlay, Samuel Fogel, and Yaakov Fogel; his brother and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Michelle Horovitz; and Sandra Schotland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Cohen and Evelyn Horovitz; his stepfather, Nate Horovitz; and his brother-in-law, Marvin Schotland.
