At the age of 18, Faye fell in love with the boy who would become the love of her life, Marvin Bursk. They eloped after only a few months, but shortly thereafter had a Jewish ceremony at the insistence of her mother. They moved into their forever home in Northridge in 1960, where they raised their 3 girls while Shirley raised her daughter next door. They were very close-knit, enjoying camping, cruises, and other vacations for nearly 61 years until Marv’s death in 2011.
Faye was not known for her cooking skills; she was barely able to cook anything without a microwave, and joked she didn’t know how her children survived. Faye also had a brown thumb… she once watered a plant for months and bragged about how well it was doing, only to realize she was watering a plastic plant!
Faye worked for the County of LA at Olive View Medical Center as a telephone operator. She bragged about being the “voice of Olive View,” making the first overhead announcement after the hospital reopened following the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. After retiring from the County in 1989, she worked as a bookkeeper at her daughter and son-in-law’s law firm, where she managed complex tasks by hand and balanced accounts to the penny. She worked up until her death, never fully retiring.
Faye liked to stay busy, visiting the mall weekly with her daughters (who she referred to as her best friends) for lunch and a nice stroll. She read romance novels and crafted latch hook rugs that can be found on the wall of every family member’s household. She also collected clocks; her grandchildren have been known to count 60-70 throughout her home.
On September 4, 2024, Faye made a quiet and graceful exit at the age of 92, surrounded by the love she nurtured all her life.
She was predeceased by her father in 1972; both her mother and sister in 1987; and her granddaughter Lindsay in 2024. Faye and Marv eventually legally adopted Shirley’s adult daughter, Karen, in 1995. She is survived by her 4 loving daughters—Sherry, Bonnie (George), Karen, and Loren (Norm); her 7 amazing grandchildren—Michele, Tara, Adam (Caitlin), Erin, David (Maital), and Lonnie (Evan); and her 7 adorable great-grandchildren—Nathan, Devon, Atticus, Maverick, Ronnie, Carter, and Benjamin.
She was beautifully elegant but a stubborn force to be reckoned with; opinionated but innately selfless; fiercely independent but hated being alone. We will dearly miss everything about her.
A funeral service for Faye will be held Sunday, September 15, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Eternal Light Chapel, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills, CA 91345. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Eden Memorial Park, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills, CA 91345.
