It is with deep appreciation for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Gert Byer, a kind and compassionate woman whose devotion to her family will be cherished forever. Gert passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025.
Gert was born to her beloved mother Pearl on May 14, 1935 in Montreal, Quebec. Her childhood was not easy, and at age 15, she was forced to leave school to work to help support the family, which then included her young brother Stanley. Despite the challenges she faced, Gert embraced her responsibilities with determination and an abiding love for her mother and younger brother. At age 22, Gert met and married the love of her life, Norton, and they later built the family that became her greatest source of joy and pride. She was the devoted mother of three sons and was overjoyed (and relieved!) when they all married and started families of their own. She had tremendous love for her sons and daughter-in-laws, but her love shone brightest over everyone and everything for her five grandchildren, who truly made her life complete.
Gert was kind and compassionate. She loved sports, humor and a well-shaken martini. She loved to smile and laugh. Her smile was joyful. Her unwavering love and support (and her smile) will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Gert is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Norton, her three sons Larry, Mike and Jeff, her daughter-in-laws Maria and Theresa, her cherished grandchildren Matthew, Brandon, Lucas, Natalie and Kyla, her brother Stanley and her sister-in-law Phyllis. She is also survived by her cherished extended family in Canada, whom she missed and loved dearly.
A funeral service for Gertrude will be held Sunday, January 19, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Groman Eden Mortuary and Eden Memorial Park, 11500 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills, CA 91345.
