Kate Tobias

Kate was born Feb. 2, 1913, in Manhattan, the second of five children to Israel and Rose Heller.

Kate’s first job was in New York City as the operator of a comptometer, an early calculator. She married Sidney Tobias on February 3, 1934 and raised two children, Ivan Tobias and Llana Tobias Sherman. Through most of their marriage, she worked with Sidney in his tuxedo shop. After Sidney and Kate retired, the couple moved to Florida and later, while in her 80’s, Kate moved to California to be closer to her son, daughter, and their families.

Kate stayed active with daily walks until she ultimately had to give them up at the tender age of 102. Her love for reading persisted. She was known to have had a stack of books close at hand.

Her interest in current events and sense of humor will always be remembered along with her sound mind, body, and spirit throughout her journey.

Kate remained close to her family and is survived by her brother, Seymour Heller, daughter-in-law, Carol Tobias, and her four grandchildren, Andrea Jones, Debra Tobias, Jonathan Sherman and Relissa Payne as well as eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, Ross, David, Sidney, Lindsey, Trevor, Vivian and Livia.

Funeral services will be held Sunday March 27, at 2 p.m. at Groman Eden Mortuary, Mission Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
