My only contact with Lillian Hawthornes was one column she wrote for the LA Times, "Life lessons help her face cancer."  In that piece, she recounted three life lessons that helped her to cope with her breast cancer treatments.  In sharing them, she helped me cope with life situations very different from cancer treatments but no less painful or frightening.  I carry a copy of that article in my purse; it keeps me grounded.  It reminds me to do all that I can, as best I can - and this helps me to persevere.  Thank you, Professor Hawthorne.

My 29 year career at the USC School of Social Work is indebted to Lillian Hawthorne, who hired me and became my admired role model.  She guided me through the first four years on the job as a superb exacting supervisor who ultimately became a friend. Her contribution to field education and me during those years was immeasurable. She lived a fulfilled and good life. I am sorry I did not learn about the date of her funeral until the 26th, as I would have attended.
