Phil Raider, 66, beloved husband, dad, grand-Popeye, brother and friend (alias “Capt. Billy”) passed on Monday morning in his home surrounded by his beloved family. Phil was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 25, 1948 and is survived by his wife, Roberta Tishman, daughters Shannon Raider-Ginsburg and Jennifer Karan, son-in-laws Steven Raider-Ginsburg and Ken Karan, grandson Lev Raider-Ginsburg and brothers Harvey, David, and Robert Raider, sisters-in-law, Anne, Maxine, and Liz, brother-in-law Bob Tishman, and many, many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Al and Estelle Raider. Phil was a generous, passionate and strong leader in his life. He was President of Congregation Mishkon Tephilo in Venice Beach from 2010 to 2012 and was a member of the Venice Neighborhood Council through much of the 1990s.
His charisma enlivened a loving and joyful community along with his wife, besheret Roberta. Phil and Roberta’s travels took them from Peru to Alaska, Europe to the Middle East. A dedicated runner, he completed marathons from Catalina to Boston, and twice raised money for AIDS research by completing the California AIDS bicycle ride. He was a self-taught carpenter who launched his own business, eventually becoming Phil Raider Construction. A lover of the outdoors and dedicated environmental steward he was a lifelong member of the Sierra Club and many other environmental nonprofits. Camping, hiking, canoeing brought him and Roberta all over this country once even capsizing a canoe in the everglades under the watchful eye of alligators.
A lover of art, poetry and good bourbon he infused energy into those who were around him. Always quick with a (bad/corny/low) joke and conversation he was so beloved by so many and he has gone too soon. Our hearts are broken.
Phil and his family thank the UCLA Oncology and Mesothelioma team, and his many incredible and compassionate caregivers.
Donations can be made to Congregation Mishkon Tephilo in Venice, CA or to the Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Groman Eden Mortuary.
