Shirley Rosen was born January 31, 1924 and grew up in Los Angeles. She graduated from Fairfax high school and went to UCLA. She majored in art and French. She picked tomatoes for the war effort her senior year of high school out in the Valley where Birmingham High School is now. In high school, she took a part time job at May Co. and earned 10 cents an hour. After a week, her father said he’d pay her 50 cents an hour to paint silk fabric for the silk dresses he was manufacturing. Shirley’s first real job was for Fox Studios, who had hired a French director and she worked as his assistant, secretary, and interpreter.
Shirley met Leonard through the garment business. They married in April of 1946 and were married for 64 years. They shared a love of golf and bridge. She loved cards and never watched TV without playing Solitaire at the same time. Shirley and Leonard traveled often with golf friends to golf courses all over California and the Southwest several times a year where they all played golf during the day and bridge in the evenings. Shirley and Leonard traveled many times with friends to Hawaii indulging in those same activities. Leonard never wanted to revisit Europe his World War II experiences, so Shirley and her sister, Ruth, who was her best friend, traveled to Europe and to Israel on trips. She also cruised through the Panama Canal with her daughter and son-in-law.
During Shirley’s professional life, she worked for 30 years for the City of Los Angeles as the Administrative Assistant to the head Librarian for the City. She was an avid reader and loved this job because she got first access to all new book releases. She met many famous authors who spoke at the library, including Margaret Thatcher.
The center of Shirley’s life was her family; her husband, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren as well as her sister, brothers-in law, sisters-in law, numerous nieces, nephews, and their children. She loved family get togethers and seeing all of the immediate and extended family. She said to her children that she had a wonderful life, the best children and did everything she wanted to do.
