Sol Zuckerman was born to Russian immigrants, Samuel and Pauline on July 5, 1922. As the youngest of five boys, he was the only one born in the United States. He grew up in the shadow of Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York. His father passed away when Sol was 7 years old leaving his mother and older brothers to support the family by working in their successful produce business.
After graduating high school, Sol was hired as an usher at the popular Paramount Theater in New York City. He worked there for several exciting years, with many a good story to tell, before being drafted into the United States Army. He served in 389th Infantry Regiment in Hawaii and Japan until his honorable discharge in 1946.
He returned to New York where he met his wife, Roslyn Light, of blessed memory, at a Jewish camp in the Poconos. They wed on March 27, 1955 and were happily married for over 60 years.
After their wedding they settled in Fresh Meadows, New York, where they had two sons, Kenneth and Steven. In 1965 the family moved to Roslyn, Long Island. Sol had a very successful 40-year career as a salesman for TrimFit, Inc. in their New York region. The Zuckermans were long time members of Temple Beth Shalom in Roslyn, where Sol was involved in the Men’s Club and many other volunteer activities.
After living in Roslyn for 27 wonderful years, where they cultivated many lifelong friends, Sol & Roslyn moved to Mission Viejo, California to retire and be closer to family. The Zuckermans became members of Congregation Eilat in Mission Viejo and Temple Beth El in Aliso Viejo. Though retired, Sol volunteered a lot of his time at Irvine Regional Hospital and Kenneth’s medical office in Irvine. Sol was active in his local community playing poker and paddle tennis well into his 80’s. He was an avid follower of the stock market and loved his New York Yankees and reading his daily newspapers.
Sol had the opportunity to travel to many places around the world with Roslyn and enjoyed taking cruises with family and friends. Some of their most special trips were those to the State of Israel. Their last visit was to witness the Bar Mitzvah of his grandson, Sam, at the Kotel.
He is survived by his sons Kenneth and Steven, daughters-in-law, Charlene and Brenda, grandchildren, Farin, Samuel, Emily, Pamela, Adam and Eric, and great-grandchildren, Yitzi, Rivka, Jona, Hailey and April. The love and pride in his family and his Jewish heritage were the cornerstones of his life and the immense joy he received from each contributed greatly to his happiness and contentment.
Though many of his family and friends have departed this world, those who remain will miss his candor, humor, love, encouragement, generosity, compassion and honesty.
Donations in Sol’s memory can be made to the Jewish National Fund, Friends of the Israeli Defense Force, Heritage Pointe, Chabad of Mission Viejo, Temple Beth El of South Orange County, Congregation B’nei Torah (Sandy Springs, GA) or any Jewish charity of your choice.
Arrangements under the direction of Groman Eden Mortuary, Mission Hills, CA.
