I am seeing this in 2022 and I have no idea if anyone will see it.  I too became a physician.  Steve was older than me and was one of my counselors at Camp Ramah in Ojai CA. I am the same age as his sister Susan.  I have great memories of him and am so sad he has passed

It is 3 years ago today that Steven died.  To all the friends, family, colleagues, and patients who have so lovingly written about him, we sincerely thank you. We miss him dearly and always will do so, but your kind thoughts help us.

I am saddened to only now hear of the death of Dr. Mittleman. He was not only a wonderful, caring physician, but a true "mensch". He cared for my family member as if he was one of his own. Clearly he treated all patients this way. Belated condolences to his family and friends.

Steve never leaves my heart or my mind. I wanted to share on here a funny story I shared with his mom. I'm sure you can imagine Steve doing this. 

I remember a time when I was pregnant with my daughter, Steve tried to convince me that I couldn't have chocolate while pregnant. That one I knew better with him but one of the medical assistants years before
thought he was serious and went months without eating chocolate. At about her 6 month check up she asked the OB if she could start eating chocolate during the 3rd trimester since she was going crazy craving chocolate. The OB laughed and asked where she got that crazy idea. Needless to say Steve had a
VERY upset pregnant medical assistant when she got back to the office. He would laugh so hard telling that story because he would always give such
sarcastic advice that he didn't think she took him seriously.

Steve was a true friend. We entered practice about the same time and he was always supportive, providing me with advice, assistance, and friendship. Even after I moved away, he always made an effort to stay in touch. We shared an interest in UCLA athletics, often reminiscing about sports, politics, and our many hours together. I will miss him.

Steve and I started our residency together at Bridgeport Hospital ,we were interns ,and then residents and senior residents and graduated together.
Steve besides being a good doctor had a lot of love and affection for his patients, he was a caring physician a good friend and an advocate for his patients.
Steve and I came from very different backgrounds and quite honestly to begin with had nothing in common other then being doctors, I was not a born American he was, I was not white he was, English was not my mother tongue his was and  and the most amazing thing was I was Moslem and he was Jewish, but inspite of all the differences we became the best of friends. He was there for me when I needed him and I was there for him when he needed me. He saw me as I got married and he saw me when my children were born and as rightfully one day while visiting LA he remarked to my children that he knew me longer then my children had known me and even longer then my wife had known me.
He was one of my most dear and loyal friend and will be missed and kept in my prayers.

Dr. Mittleman was our family doctor for about 20 years and practiced the kind of medicine that is rarely found today.  He actually cared about his patients.  
We will miss him dearly.

I just found out that my dearest Dr. passed away.  He was the best Doctor I has ever known.  He was my Doctor for over 12 years and he was not just my Doctor, but my advocate, my brother, my father...I am in absolute shock...why did this happen? why to him? He was young still.  What am I going to do now without him? I 'm lost...I'll surely miss him for the rest of my life...Rest in peace my dear Doctor.

Steve we will miss you and your sense of humor

There are 3 things I remember most about Steve.  First, his courage.  I don't think I've ever met anyone who wanted to be a physician more than he.  This career was not handed to him; he worked for it harder than anyone I've ever known, not allowing innumerable obstacles (social, societal, physical, geographic, economic) stand in his way.  Secondly, his kindness.  I never heard him speak in an intentionally hurtful way to anyone, or about anyone.  On the very few occasions when he spoke or wrote angrily, it seemed obvious that he was reluctant to do so.  He was known to do generous things for others quietly and unostentatiously, with no goal of reward or even recognition..  Lastly, he had the very rare ability to listen.  He seemed to always make an effort to understand, with an open and tolerant heart, what someone was saying or feeling, even when he disagreed.  
         Although I told him some of these things over the years, I am sad that I did not do enough.  As his uncle for 54 years, dating all the way back to diaper-changing days, I have usually been geographically separated from him—but I should have tried harder to tell him some of these things.  Steve—if you're listening—I'm sorry; and I love you.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Mittleman's family.  I'm still in shock, disbelief and grieving.  I was one of his patients for over 12 years.  He truly was an amazing Dr. he was attentive, caring and very knowledgeable.  Never felt rushed by his appointments, always took his time to hear my concerns or medical issues.  There was never a "stupid" question.  I truly will miss him.  I'm glad that I was able to talk to him right before his sudden pass to let him know how much respect and what a great Doctor he was.  May you rest in Peace, I will miss your smile and sense of humor.

I just learned today that Dr. Mittleman died and I'm very sad about that. He was my doctor from 2000 to the present and saw me through multiple life threatening illnesses from cancer to a serious infection, and he knew everything there is to know about me medically. He was compassionate, devoted to his practice, and an advocate for my treatments through other clinics and hospitals. My condolences to his entire family.

To all of you  who have written such loving, glowing comments about Steven, we sincerely thank you. It truly has been a comfort to read all your comments.  We are going through a difficult time, and perhaps all the thoughts you've shared will help us heal.  We all loved him so much, and we thank you for your support.

I just learned today of his passing.  He was my doctor for many years and saw me thru my Stage 4 melanoma and bladder cancer.  He was a great guy and great doctor.  I am shocked and will miss him

Dr Mittleman was my doctor for over 7 years.. He was the most caring person I have ever met. My deepest sympathies to his parents, and family that he spoke of so often with me. I just learned of Dr. Mittleman's passing today. I'm so sorry to hear that he is no longer with us - he was a fantastic and very caring doctor. I came to him when I moved to Los Angeles 10 years ago, and he has helped me tremendously over the years. He always went out of his way to help me get the care that I needed. I know he will be irreplaceable. I wish his family and loved ones as much peace as possible during this trying time. I am so sorry for all of our loss.

"Dr. M" and I shared 12 years of intense and diverse conversations about far more than my medical needs.  There were a number of years when I was his last appointment of the week, every other week, and seldom did we chat for less than an hour. His intellect and sharp wit were so engaging. My heart goes out to his parents, siblings and their families, and to little Peanut, who may just miss him most of all.  I, for one, will miss him tremendously.

So very sad. Having shared experiences on-line I was lucky to have met him in person. What a great person.

I heard today of the passing of my dear Dr. Mittleman.  He saved my life through his skill and intelligence and I considered him a friend and healer.  There will never be another doctor like him.

I just found out on 12\30 that my doctor, Dr. Steven Mittleman has passed. Dr. Mittleman, was the best Doctor that there is, he wasn't about money he was about helping his patients, he went beyond. Dr. Mittleman was my doctor for alittle over 18 years , he listend to you, we would talk about how we have aged through the years he would talk about his cat, me about my kids, grandchildren and greatgrandson and my dog, he was a friend in a sense not just my doctor, I will miss him, you put your life in someones hands and now he is gone, love you Dr. Mittleman, God Bless You. To Mr.and Mrs. Mittleman you raised a wonderful son, person and human being,Thank you.

My deepest sympathies to Steve's family and friends on this sad occasion. I was fortunate to have met Steve on-line and then subsequently in person. He was far deeper than the nice, easy-going person he appeared at first glance. He possessed a sometimes wry, witty and sharp sense of humor; a deep passion for his Bruins and Dodgers; a belief in many social and liberal causes; and a huge heart filled with compassion. He was a man who truly cared and helped so many people in so many unsung ways. He lived a life of repairing the world - Tikkun olam - and I was blessed to have been counted among those whose lives he touched.

His shyness didn't fool us...his helping hand guided us, and his loyalty was beyond measure. He was always well intended with his actions. I was with Steve the day he bought that beautiful painting that sits above the small couch that he loved to take naps on. That painting reminds me so about his life. Beautiful. Colorful. Amazing. Please accept my deepest condolences on passing of a truly wonderful person. As his online friend unfortunatley a few years. i will never forget his kindness, his warm voice when we talked on the phone, the warmth he spread around so generously, his wonderful sense of humor. So much light and love i had recieved from him i always heared his love for his family (parents,bother and his children who he baby sat and was always proud and happy to do) love for his patients, love for humanity. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing! He was such a wonderful man and doctor!

I'll always remember Steven as a passionate UCLA fan. Whenever I saw him, we'd talk about the Bruins. Billy Joel had it right, only the good die young.

I never had the opportunity to meet Steve in person. But we did share a common bond, both of us flew to Texas to pick up a cat. Oy, as Steve would frequently comment to my bizarre posts on Facebook. I will miss his virtual friendship, wit, kindness and compassion.

I send my deepest and most sincere condolences to Steve's family and loved ones. I am another of the many people who knew him only through Facebook or other social media, but I know that we all feel his loss very deeply. He was a kind man with a gentle sense of humor who shared his own life with us while taking an interest in what was happening in our lives as well. Like so many others, I will miss his humorous "free but questionable medical advice," his funny photos, and his updates on his beloved cat Peanut. His kindness and friendship will not be forgotten. Wishing Steve's family strength and peace during this difficult time.

As many others have mentioned, I too was an online friend of Steve's. I think it says a lot about someone if they can make an impression on you without even meeting you, and Steve fell into that category. I truly appreciated his humor, his warmth and his compassion. May his memory be a blessing.

I "met" Dr. Steve in a Jewish singles Facebook group and we quickly became friends. We talked about meeting in person next time I was in LA, which I was hoping would be next year. He was a very kind, caring, and funny man. We shared a love of cats and he loved my cat posts and would re-post them often and I would re-post his as well. His last comments to me on facebook were comforting words over the recent passing of one of my cats. I will miss him very much. May his memory always be a blessing. Mr. and Mrs. Mittleman-- Your son Steve touched so many lives, in person and virtually.  I am one of the many who never met Steve in person, but got to know him online.  He was compassionate, nice, funny, caring, and so much more.  
From his "free but questionable medical advice" to "liking" comments or pictures and his thoughtful replies to something posted, Steve was a wonderful presence in my life.  You raised a wonderful son and my heart breaks that he was taken too soon.  May memories of him always bring a smile to your face even if there are tears in your eyes.

I knew Dr. Mittleman on a professional basis; I was a patient of his for several years.  I was always impressed by his humility and his black sense of humor.  He knew intuitively that I would not be offended. I want his family to know how valued he was by his patients and that he was an exceptionally talented physician.

I was so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I just recently saw him at an activity and we had a wonderful conversation. I was looking forward to seeing him again soon. My condolences to the Mittleman family on the death of a wonderful, kind and gentle man.

Words cannot express how truly sorry I am for your loss.  I've known Steve (virtually) since about 2007 or so and not "seeing" him every day in social media leaves a real void for all of us.

We had lots of chats over the years and he truly has a heart of gold and was a huge presence in our online community. Many times I had mentioned about getting out to LA for family gatherings, but it never came to pass.  Even though this was a year or several months away, Steve was so excited to greet me in LA.  It speaks volumes about who he was.

Steve was one of the all time genuinely nicest people that I have ever met. I think I speak for many people when I say that right now my heart is in my stomach and I feel like I have been turned inside out. Anyone who ever met Steve would get this. There is no way to make sense of the incomprehensible. Steve was taken too soon.  Instead I've decided that through my sadness I will remember how blessed I am to have known Steve if only for a short time and only through cyber space and on the phone, and how honored I feel that a man who was so 'good' considered me to be his friend. This doesn't make the sadness go away but it makes me remember that although short, Steve lived a 'worthwhile' life and was loved by many. I don't remember the quote exactly but 'love isn't measured by how much you love but by how much you are loved'. If this is true, and I'm sure it is, then Steve lived a VERY full life. My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Mittleman family. May you find peace and comfort in your very many happy memories in the days, weeks and months to come. ?

Dr Steve and I had been 'online friends' for many years now. We shared many of the same political views and shared articles between us and commented often. We shared funny things, serious things and things in general. It was part of my routine to go to his FB page to see what he liked or read recently - my touchstone, of sorts. 
When I read yesterday of Steve's passing I went numb and remained so - how is it possible? No more 'Free but questionable medical advice', his fav teams status.
I had looked forward to meeting him when I got to LA over the next year or so - I feel a huge loss that we never met in person.
Rest in peace my friend - your life was a blessing for all that knew and love you.

Dr. Steve was a thoughtful, funny man who cared deeply about his patients and people in general. He always told us to prize life because it is so fragile, and he lived that in his own life. I only wish he could have stuck around for quite a lot longer. My heart goes out to everyone who loved this kind healer and thinker. Do what you have to do to get through the next few days, weeks, and months, and in the fullness of time, let's try our best to honor his memory by following his example.

I'm still in a bit of shock and disbelief.  Steve was one of the genuinely nicest people I've met. I am truly sad and will miss seeing him on my next trip to LA. My thoughts are with Steve's family. I hope the love and support so many are expressing here can be of some comfort.

I'm honored to have known Steve for 7 years. He was the 1st friend I met on JD, my partner-in-Dodger crime, my cheerleader when I had a bad day, and could toss a one-line zinger like no other.

We attended several Dodger games together, shared many dinners and group get-togethers, and one particular 3-hour marathon phone call, watching the 2008 Olympic Opening ceremonies.

Steve once accompanied me to the hospital visit my grandmother - after which she and my aunt harangued me for months about why I'm not 'dating' this mensch. And that he was! 

I will love and miss this special man forever.

I loved Steve as a brother.  We 'got' each other and so enjoyed the times we spent together.  He was ALWAYS there, whenever I called and said I would be in town. This is one of those times when I'm just plain "typeless" and cannot find the right words to convey my feelings of shock and sadness that you've left us so early.
