Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, and Friend
Pioneering Computer Scientist, Dedicated Genealogist, and Author
Werner L. Frank, a man of boundless curiosity and dedication, passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Born on June 4, 1929, in Eppingen, Germany, Werner’s early life was shaped by the resilience of his Jewish family, who fled Nazi Germany in 1937 to start anew in the United States.
Werner’s career in computing was profoundly influenced by his service in the U.S. Army, where he first encountered digital computing. His military training at Fort Bliss, Texas, provided him with invaluable skills that set the stage for his future accomplishments. After completing his service, he furthered his education at the University of Illinois, working on the pioneering ILLIAC digital computer. This experience, combined with his early roles in the industry, paved the way for his significant contributions to computing.
In 1962, Werner co-founded Informatics General Corporation, a leader in computer services and software development. Informatics' Mark IV software became one of the world’s leading products, influencing the future of the industry.
Werner was also a passionate genealogist whose meticulous research led him to publish several books, including his autobiography and family history in Legacy: The Saga of a Jewish German Family Across Time and Circumstance, The Curse of Gurs: Way Station to Auschwitz, and a business thriller, Corporate War: Poison Pills and Golden Parachutes, inspired by his work experiences.
Above all, Werner was a devoted family man, a loving husband to Phoebe, and a dedicated father to their three children, Judi, Dori, and Daniel. He was a proud grandfather to Jessica, Rachel, Rona, Tammy, Shelly, Cal, and Devon, and a cherished great-grandfather to Max. Werner’s generosity and commitment to family were evident in his efforts to bring the entire family together, creating lasting memories that will be treasured for generations.
His family would often try to find the perfect “gootzie” to bring him for a visit, whether that be a cheese danish, cherries, a linzertorte lovingly made by family, or pickled herring. He and his wife Phoebe also had a special love for McDonald’s ice cream.
His legacy of curiosity, innovation, and deep love for his family will continue to inspire all who knew him.
