Bill Lambert was born in the Bronx, on September 14, 1929 to Helen and Izzy Lambert and grew up in Los Angeles with his brother, Fred and sister, Frances. He graduated from UCLA in 1951 and started teaching at Montague Elementary school in Pacoima, California in 1955. Bill quickly became involved with the local Teacher’s Association which in 1970 he helped form into a fully fledged Union: United Teachers Los Angeles. Bill became the political director for UTLA, working tirelessly to advance teachers’ rights. He continued in that position until his retirement in 2008. Over those more than 40 years, Bill changed the way California public school teachers were treated, starting with winning the right for all California teachers to bargain collectively, and going on to achieve so much more.
In 1960, Bill and Lenore married and moved to their home in Tarzana. He was very proud of the family he and Lenore built: four children (Mark, Liz, Milissa, Richard) four sons/daughters in-law (Joanna, Barry, Floyd, Ingrid) seven grandchildren (Izzi, Rosie, Ziv, Lior, Harper, Cammie, Rowyn) two grandchildren in-law (Shehab, Hannah) and his first great-grandchild, Musa Marwan. Bill loved his family and friends intensely and was loved intensely in return.
