Ray grew up helping his father farm the family land and learning to operate heavy farm equipment from an early age. He also learned to fly from his father off of their private air strip located on the farm. Ray was a graduate of Alpena High School in Alpena, Arkansas and received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas. He retired as a Lt. Colonel from the Army National Guard and also from the Corps of Engineers as Chief of the Soils Design Section. Ray designed many dams across the United States and internationally. He worked extensively on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway locks and dams and he designed Gaillard Island in Mobile Bay.
Ray was an avid sailor and with his children and friends enjoyed many fun and exciting times on Mobile Bay and other local waters. Ray will be remembered as always happy, full of stories and for having the ability to talk with and enjoy the company of everyone he met.
Ray is survived by his children, daughter Leslie Lovorn (Joe), son Patrick Gustin, granddaughter Cate Lovorn, brother Tom Gustin, nieces, nephews and his dog Chase. He will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know and be loved by Ray. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Lockie Gustin and sister Ann Madle.
