Sammy was a truly special man; a friend to all who knew him, exceptionally quick-witted, and blessed with a warmth and kindness that made everyone around him feel welcome. He set the standard for what it meant to be a devoted husband and father. To know Sammy was a privilege, and his gentle spirit, humor, generosity, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed.
Sammy is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Kay Smith; his daughter, Brennan Smith, and her husband, Will Farley; his brother, Jamie Smith; his sister, Janice Newsom; and his three cherished dogs, Tippy, Rosie, and Jasmine. His family meant the world to him, and he treasured the time he shared with them. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Frances Smith.
Sammy dedicated more than 20 years to the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS), where he served as Training Manager. Earlier in his career, he traveled around the world while working for BellSouth. He was a lifelong learner and educator, earning a Bachelor of Education from Livingston State University and a Master’s degree in Human Resources.
Beyond his professional life, Sammy was deeply committed to his community and his Catholic faith. He was a dedicated member of the Crewe of Columbus, serving as Columbus in 2020, and was the Financial Secretary of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Fifty Funny Fellows and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
His faith was an important part of his life and legacy. Sammy was a longtime parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where he generously served his parish community as a member of the adult choir, lecturer, and Eucharistic minister. He found great joy in his faith, his friendships, and the many ways he could serve others.
Sammy leaves behind a lifetime of laughter, friendship, love, and memories that will be cherished by all who had the good fortune to know him. While he will be profoundly missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and with the Heavenly Father.
A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church in Sammy’s memory.
