Doyle McKinnon Helms

Mr. Doyle McKinnon Helms, age 73, of Monroe NC, passed away on December 31, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19.

He was born on July 6, 1947 in Murphy, NC to Ward McKinnon and Ola Mae Cook Helms. Doyle and Darlene Pope joined in marriage on December 4, 1977 at Freedom Baptist Church in Monroe. Mr. Helms served overseas from March of 1967 until September of 1969. He proudly served his country in Vietnam as an Aircraft Marksman on the UH-1 (Hewey) and completed his service as an Aircraft Maintenance Crewman. Doyle was honorably discharged as an E-5 Specialist in 1969 and began his career in construction until he retired in 2008.

Doyle loved hunting, cooking, spending the day on the lake in his pontoon boat and camping with his close friends. He enjoyed being outside and working with his hands. He had a true interest in history and loved to tell anyone who would listen a good story or even a fish tale.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Helms; his daughters, Donna Coble, Celena Hayes, Amanda Wooten(Isaac) and Jennifer Hall; his grandchildren, Lindsey Edleblute (Jacob), Deshaune and Amyah Hall, Sophia and Wyatt Wooten, Alayah and Avonah Hall; his brother, Bryan Helms and by his sister, Cathy Heflin. He was preceded in death by his father, Ward McKinnon Helms; his mother, Ola Mae Cook Helms; his step-father, Ronald Van Helms and by his siblings, Linda Alexander (2019), Jerry Helms (2015), Bruce Helms (2012) and Jimmy Helms (2009).

The family will receive friends from 12:00pm until 2:00pm Thursday, January 14, 2021 at North Union Chapel Church of God. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Helms will begin at 2:00pm in the church sanctuary. A committal service will be held at 9:00am Friday, January 15, 2021 in Salisbury National Cemetery with military honors. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is serving the family of Mr. Doyle McKinnon Helms.

We always thought so much of Doyle. Very kind and thoughtful person that loved the Lord and always willing to help anyone. Have not seen him in few yrs but we mentioned him and Darlene often, and the times we shared in church. God bless and comfort the family during this time.
