Obituary of Hazel Hilton
Doris Hazel Hilton of Monroe passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 12, 2021 when she succumbed to cancer. She was born on February 6, 1930 in Union County, daughter of the late Mack Whiteford and Fannie Broome Helms. Hazel led a full and rewarding life with her loving husband and three children. Hazel graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1948 where she was a starting forward for the ladies’ basketball team and was named to the All County team. Her love for the sport continued throughout her life. Hazel was active in Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Monroe where she served as the church’s treasurer for many years, participated in the choir for decades and was active with the United Methodist Women’s group. Each year the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Women made/sold pumpkin rolls, and Hazel took great pride in the fact that she rolled them better and tighter than anyone else in the group. She was an avid cook who didn’t hesitate to feed friends and neighbors any chance she had. Friends would drop off bushels of fruits and vegetables during the summer for her to can which she then lovingly shared with friends and family. Every year for over 50 years, Hazel looked forward to working the “front desk” at Hilton and Helms Accountants during tax season....she believed she was the glue that held the office together which was in fact, true. She was saddened that, because of her health and the Covid-19 pandemic, she was unable to work the 2020 tax season. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jackson (“Jackman”) Hilton, her granddaughter Elizabeth (Liz) Hilton Dountas and two of her siblings, Lucille Griffin and Paul Neal Helms. She is survived by her children, Karen Goodfellow (Mick) of Charlotte, Ginger Ufland of Monroe, Robert “Eddie” Hilton (Robin) of Midland; granddaughter, Katie Hilton; grandson-in-law, Chris Dountas and siblings, Robert Helms, Rachel Tyson and Carol Seibel. The family would like to express their love and gratitude to Julie Eudy for all the care and kindness she showed Hazel over the years but particularly after her cancer diagnosis. Friends may pay their respects and sign the guest book at McEwen Funeral Home 204 South Main Street, Monroe on Friday, January 15 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Due to Covid 19, the family will not be present. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 16 at Lakeland Memorial Park 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church at 2807 Corinth Church Rd., Monroe, NC 28112 or to the Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research (in memory of Elizabeth (Liz) Hilton Dountas and Doris Hazel Hilton) by mail to The Paula Takacs Foundation for Sarcoma Research, PO Box 78416, Charlotte, NC 28271 or online at www.paulatakacsfoundation.org.
