Helen Mae Latham

Mrs. Helen Mae Holloway Latham, age 99, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center - Union in Monroe, NC. She was born October 26, 1914 in Earleton, Florida, the eldest of four children of the late Lon Alton Holloway and Ilma Lee Pentecost Holloway. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, E.G. Latham; one sister: Mary Holloway Fincher; two brothers: Robert J. Holloway of Tampa, Florida and Cecil P. Holloway of Jacksonville, Florida; two granddaughters: Helen Elizabeth McCaskill of Fort Washington, Maryland and Virginia Gail Price of Monroe, NC.

Survivors include three sons: Johnny (Judy Rushing) Latham, Roger (Gail Fowler) Latham, both of Monroe, NC; David (Manetta Williams) Latham of Matthews, NC; two daughters: Helen Jane (Tom McCaskill) of Fort Washington, Maryland and Lorna (Reuben H. “Hank” Price) of Monroe, NC; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Latham was a beautiful and kind person as well as a wonderful mother and grandmother. She and Mr. Latham lived on a farm in the Unionville Community. He was an agriculture teacher at Unionville and Piedmont High Schools. When their youngest child was ten years old, Helen enrolled in a one year course at Richardson’s Beauty College in Charlotte. Her home beauty shop, which she operated for twenty four years, was said to be the first of its kind in Unionville. A person of grace, Mrs. Latham was a beautiful dancer and enjoyed sharing her talents with friends of all ages.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Shiloh Baptist Church with The Rev. Ron Hanna of Shiloh Baptist Church and The Rev. Dac Croasmun of Trinity Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. There will be a private interment at Lakeland Memorial Park.
