He was born on December 15, 1935, to the late S. Clifford and Elizabeth Spurlock.
Herb was a Godly man who lovingly served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. After giving his life to Christ in 1970, Herb never looked back. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 3 decades. Herb was a deacon and also served as their chairman. He also went on numerous mission trips and faithfully sang in the church choir. Herb had many interests and hobbies in his life. He was very talented as a skilled woodworker and loved building grandfather clocks. Every chance he would get, Herb would be in his woodworking shop “piddling” around on his latest project. He also enjoyed a lifelong passion for camping that allowed him to travel to many different states, including 3 trips out west. Herb also enjoyed photography and loved being behind the camera, taking photos of loved ones and nature. Although he had no college education, Herb was an engineer by trade where he worked as a supervisor at Acme (GM) NamePlate for 35 years before his retirement in May of 2000.
His legacy will last for generations to come, and he will be greatly missed.
Along with his parents, Herb is preceded in death by his brothers, Claude Thomas Spurlock and Stanley Spurlock; and great-grandchild, Mia Cochran. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dolores Spurlock; children, Steve Spurlock (Anita) and Pam Thomas (Mitchell); grandchildren, Megan Lee (Andrew), Anna Cochran (Tyler), Desiree Winslow (Tim), and Brandon Thomas (Leigh); and great-grandchildren, Allister Lee, Hallie Cochran, Jackson Winslow, and Hunter Thomas.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 2301 N. Rocky River Rd., Monroe, North Carolina. A funeral service to celebrate Herb’s life will be held following the visitation at 11:15 am in the church sanctuary with burial following the service at Lakeland Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church Scholarship fund; 2301 N. Rocky River Rd., Monroe, North Carolina, 28110; or Hospice of Union County; 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, North Carolina, 28110.
