James “David” Clontz, 89, of Monroe, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, after a period of declining health. Born on August 21, 1936, to the late Theron and Ona Lee Clontz, he was raised in the Unionville community, where he learned the values of hard work, humility, and devotion to family that shaped the rest of his life.
On November 5, 1959, David married the love of his life, Audrey H. Clontz, and together they shared 66 years of steadfast partnership, building a home filled with love, resilience, and unwavering commitment.
David worked throughout his life as both a farmer and a truck driver, roles that reflected his strong work ethic and his deep connection to the outdoors. Whether tending the land or traveling long stretches of highway, he took pride in providing for his family and contributing to the community he cherished.
He was a devoted father to his children—Steven Clontz (Sharon), the late Stanley Clontz, and James Clontz (Heather)—and he found immense joy in his role as a grandfather. His grandchildren, Jennifer Spidel (Ryan), Daniel Clontz, Brandon Clontz (Tara), Amanda Howell (J’Daniel), Dallas Clontz (Jordan), Lindsay Dyal (Jordan), and Hayley Christenberry, were a constant source of pride. He was also blessed with great grandchildren who brightened his later years: Lane and Luke Spidel and Nathaniel and Caroline Howell.
David was preceded in death by his siblings—Florine Crooke, Beverly Carnes, Julia Hinson, and Mary Alice Blackmon—each of whom he loved dearly.
Those who knew him remember him as an exceptional father and provider, a loving and attentive grandfather, and a man whose life revolved around family. He was hardworking, dependable, and happiest outdoors, where he found peace and purpose. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the love he gave freely, and the generations of family who carry his memory forward.
