Sammy was born to James B. Gantt and Frances M. Britton on April 28, 1935. Although he lived in North Carolina most of his life, Sumter, South Carolina was always home to him. Sammy graduated from the University of South Carolina and was a proud Gamecock. He first worked as a teacher and elementary school principal, but later retired from Wells Fargo Bank. Sammy loved to play tennis and watch old Western movies. In his younger years he played baseball, and still pulled for the New York Yankees. He loved to tell colorful stories and never met a stranger. He was well loved at local eateries and could light up a room as soon as he walked in.
Sammy was married to former wife Juanita M. Gantt, and they shared two children. He is survived by his daughter Shannon Hyman (married to J. Allen Hyman) and his son Britton S. Gantt. He is also survived by his brother James Gantt (Milton) and his grandchildren, Jackson Hyman, Hannah Gantt, Bryson Castle, Dayvis Castle and Landrie Castle.
The family and close friends will gather at the Evergreen Cemetery in Sumter, South Carolina, on April 28, 2024 at 1:00pm to celebrate his life.
