
He proudly served in the US Army as a private first class from 1943-1946. He was awarded several medals including the bronze star and good conduct medal. After his service to his country, Bill worked for Union County and Coca Cola Bottling. After his retirement from Coca Cola, Bill worked with Big A Auto Parts where he loved hanging out with “the guys”.
Bill loved gardening, NASCAR, Coca Cola and especially his cats. Bill was an avid woodworker providing his family with many cherished keepsakes. Bill devoted his life to the love and care of his mother and father prior to their passing.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death one brother: Richard Helms; one sister: Betty Bauguess; one beloved sister -in -law: Eva Helms.
Mr. Helms is survived by three nieces: Pam Novasad and husband Mark, Karen Shaffer and husband Ronnie, Annette Honeycutt and husband Russell; four great nephews; two great nieces.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Monroe Square and his special friends there, Len and Danny. Thanks to Autumn Care for their special care that was given to Bill during his brief stay. Thanks to Bill’s lifelong friend, Lewis Cook and his wife Anne, for their dedication and love for Bill. Also special thanks to Bill’s neighbors, especially Ron and Anthony, for always providing friendship and care for him.
Thanks to Bill’s nieces husbands for their special love and care that they showered down on Bill and for making sure that Bill had the snacks that he loved, for providing companionship to Bill and loving uncle Bill as their own.
The family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday July 1, 2014 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe with Funeral Services to celebrate his life beginning at 2:00 PM in the McEwen Colonial Chapel, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorials may be made in Bill’s memory to the Union County Humane Society, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Bill, you no longer need that wheelchair, Walk in peace forever with our Lord and Saviour.
