Joanne was born on September 9, 1944, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a Naval officer. Throughout her childhood she, her parents, and her four siblings lived in various places. Most memorable to Joanne was her time in Puerto Rico. Her family eventually settled in Charleston, South Carolina.
After meeting on a blind date, Joanne married the love of her life Alvin Paul Kitchin, Jr “Bo”, and they made their home in Monroe, North Carolina where they raised their two children.
Joanne was a dedicated wife and mother. Her family was her greatest joy, and she devoted herself fully, creating a beautiful home filled with love, encouragement and unwavering care.
Joanne was also deeply devoted to her five grandchildren, who meant the world to her. She and Bo often traveled to spend time with them, always showering them with gifts and love. Holidays were especially meaningful, as she made sure to create memorable moments and make them extra special for her grandchildren.
Joanne was the epitome of grace- a strong, spirited, caring and compassionate woman whose kindness and generosity touched everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. Her smile would light up a room, and she never met a stranger. She always greeted everyone with warmth and genuine kindness. She loved to help anyone in need, and she was known for sending flowers simply to brighten someone’s day.
Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in the beauty she brought into the world, and the countless ways she made it better. Her grace and kindness will continue to guide us, and her memory will forever be with us.
Joanne leaves behind her husband, Dr Alvin Paul Kitchin, Jr “Bo”; her son, Alvin Paul Kitchin IV (Elizabeth); her daughter, DoraAnn Kitchin McKenzie (Jack); her grandchildren, William Paul Kitchin, Caroline Eleanor McKenzie, Frances Elizabeth McKenzie, Samuel Nettles Kitchin and Robert Andrew Kitchin “Bo.”
A service will be held on November 25, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.
