He was born in Monroe, North Carolina on January 18, 1938, the son of the late Claude and Ollie Lee (Simpson) Howell. A graduate of Monroe High School, he attended East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, North Carolina, where he also played football. He later served as a Charlotte Police Officer for twenty years.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Howell is preceded in death by his brothers Charles Howell, Bruce Howell, Ottice Lee Howell, and an infant sister Betty Gene Howell. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mary Smith Howell, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Spending time outside with Mary was a favorite pastime, whether sitting in their rockers or walking through the woods. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed working together with her in the yard. A lifelong animal lover, he especially loved dogs, feeding squirrels and watching birds. Over the years he rescued many dogs, cats, and even a rooster. An accomplished athlete, he loved many sports but was particularly a fan of football and baseball. His family was very important to him and he was a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, uncle, and friend. He loved the Lord and was a longstanding member at Benton Heights Presbyterian Church where he served as a beloved greeter alongside his wife Mary. His fun-loving and caring nature, his laugh, and great hugs will be forever missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
Arrangements are in the care of McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe. A service will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Benton Heights Presbyterian Church in Monroe at 2:30pm. Memorials may be made to The Humane Society or Benton Heights Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
