

She was born on February 23, 1937, in Union County to Isom C. Melton and Elizabeth McCain Melton. She graduated from Mineral Springs High in 1955.
Maris worked and retired from Duke Power in Charlotte, NC. She then took on her best role as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who helped run the family farm. She was a faithful member all her life at Mary Elizabeth Baptist Church and committed many hours and effort to charitable organizations through her church.
Maris was a faithful choir member, taught flannel graph, was a WMU member, and went to Nicaragua on a mission trip.
Maris is survived by her loving husband, Ray Phillips. They were married 69 years, 4 months, and 12 days. She is also survived by her two children, Sharon Phillips Richardson (Kennie) and Darrell Phillips (Tammy), both of Waxhaw; grandchildren, Matthew Richardson (Savannah), Jamie Richardson, Kristy Howard, and Wesley Howard; great-grandchildren, Haley Baerga (Chris), Trenton Carnes, Briggs Ray Smith, Zoey Howard, and Max Howard; sister-in-law, Phyllis Melton; and nieces and nephews, Annette Melton, Brian Melton and Michael Melton. She was preceded in death by her stillborn baby; her parents, Isom and Elizabeth Melton; three brothers, Larry, Huey, and Ronald Melton; niece, Karen Johnson; great-niece, Ashley Johnson; and son-in-law, Dwayne Richardson.
Please join us in a celebration of her life and legacy on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Mary Elizabeth Baptist Church, located at 3703 Mary Elizabeth Church Rd., Waxhaw, NC. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm. followed by the funeral service at 3:45 pm. Burial will follow immediately after the service at the church cemetery.
