Phyllis was born on January 5th, 1933, in Union County, North Carolina to Jacob William Little and Edna Florence Rollins Little.
She became a nurse by following in the footsteps of her Aunt Ethel Rollins. She received her Associate degree from the Mercy School of nursing in 1954. Nursing became a lifelong vocation, not just a job, and she spent her entire career at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. She begrudgingly retired earlier this year at the age of 92. Phyllis loved gardening, visiting the beach and spending time with family and friends whenever she could.
Phyllis is survived by her loving daughter Katherine Blackwelder, and many cousins. She is preceded in death, not only by her parents, but also her husband John Leon Blackwelder.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:15 pm in the McEwen Colonial Chapel with burial following immediately after the service at Smyrna Fellowship Church cemetery.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mcewenmonroechapel.com for the Blackwelder family.
The family would like to thank Pastor Cole Altizer, and the Jorgensen and Nichol families for their assistance during this difficult time.
McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is honored to serve the family of Phyllis Jane Little Blackwelder.
