

He was born on April 11, 1928, to the late Robert Fisher Mitchum and Jennie Parker Mitchum in Anson County. Sherrill had a tremendous work ethic being evidenced at the age of 15 where he worked as a school bus driver. He would later work for Allison-Erwin for 52 years where he would retire as Vice President of Operations. Sherrill also honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952 where he served as a jeep driver in Korea. On October 3, 1952, he married Olivette Staton at Olive Branch Baptist Church. They lived in Charlotte for 55 years. Sherrill was a devoted husband and father. He was also an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where he received great joy in serving the Lord as a deacon. In 2008, Sherrill and Olivette moved to a home they built at the Village of Woodbridge in Monroe and would later join Lake View Baptist Church. Sherrill had many hobbies in his life including gardening, woodworking, and travelling with his wife and family. In his travels, he was able to visit all fifty states. He was also an outgoing individual who never met a stranger and who enjoyed being around and helping people. In his later years, he resided at Brookdale Monroe Square where he always had a story to tell, a smile to give, and enjoyed hanging out with his childhood friend, Fred.
Along with his parents, Sherrill is preceded in death by his wife, Olivette Mitchum. He is survived by his daughter, Gaye Mitchum of Charlotte, NC; two sons, Sherrill Allen Mitchum Jr. and his wife, Delta of Anderson, SC and Gary Mitchum of Brookhaven, GA; two grandsons, Allen Mitchum III of Nashville, TN and Alex Mitchum of Dunwoody, Ga; and two granddaughters, Leela Mitchum of Atlanta, GA and Amber Kay Mauldin and her husband Dorian of Adairsville, GA.
The family will hold an open visitation on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, NC. A funeral service to celebrate Sherrill’s life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, 1:00 pm at Olive Branch Baptist Church, located at 8804 NC-218, Marshville, NC with Pastor Billy Atkins presiding. Burial with military honors will then follow the service at the church cemetery.
