Shirley was a lifelong caregiver whose kindness, generosity, and consideration touched the lives of her family and friends. She graduated from Indian Trail School in 1953. She later worked in the school cafeterias for UCPS. She was especially loving and devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always ready to help and offer her time, love, and support.
Shirley loved to cook, knit, and garden, and she was also a talented seamstress. Her home, her handiwork, and the meals she prepared were expressions of the love she had for those around her. She will be remembered most for the care and consideration she so freely gave to her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Lynn) Helms, Dee (Ron) Hasty, and Martha (Mike) Sullivan; her siblings, Kay (Sammy) Smothers and Bill (Doris) Boyd; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Hulsey R. Helms; her son, Douglas G. Helms; and her siblings, Thomas R. Boyd and Francine M. Manus.
The family will hold a private service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Atrium Hospice in Shirley’s memory.
