Virginia "Lib" Elizabeth Helms

Born March 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Willie Durant Helms and Ruthie Jane Stevens Helms. Although her most cherished roles in life were those of devoted wife and loving mother, she enjoyed a 19 year career as baker in the Sun Valley High School cafeteria. Lib was a longtime faithful member of New Salem Baptist Church, serving in various capacities, including Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, church clerk, and WMU member.

Lib was preceded in death by Brooks Harding Helms, her loving husband of 57 years; son, Sammie Eugene Helms; and brother, Jessie Durant Helms. Left to cherish her memory are children: Mary Jane Long, Vivian Elizabeth Helms (Richard), and Roger Lane Helms (Robin); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at New Salem Baptist Church located at 2915 Goldmine Road in Monroe. Funeral services will then be held at 2:00 pm also at New Salem Baptist with interment following at Lakeland Memorial. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Union County. McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe is honored to serve the family of Mrs. Helms.
