He is predeceased by his son, Donald Rush Jones, Jr. and survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Connie Heffington Jones; son and daughter in law Mark and Jennifer Webb Jones; grandchildren Donald Rush III, Benjamin Joseph Jones and Evelyn Jones Woodall and her husband Connor.
Donald was a great Christian role model. He began teaching Sunday school when he was a junior in high school and continued to teach for 70 years. He was scheduled to teach this coming Sunday at First Baptist Church of Union Springs. He served in many capacities at Valley Park Baptist Church in Montgomery and Union Springs Baptist Church and was a deacon at both.
He was born in Electric Mills, Mississippi to Lois McKelvaine Jones and Frank Jones and grew up in Meridian Mississippi. After graduating from Mississippi State University first in his class of Civil Engineering in 1961, Donald was commissioned in the United States Army. He spent most of his active service in the newly formed Air Defense Artillery Branch serving as a Commander in a nuclear Nike Missile silo and achieving the rank of Second Lieutenant.
His career with the Federal Highway Administration began in 1966 and included the building of some of the first interstates, the Interstate 10 Mobile River Tunnel, the Interstate 10 Mobile Bay Crossing Bridge and several projects in Birmingham.
In 1998 he retired and could devote more time to raising cows which was a lifelong passion that he was able to continue until he was 84.
Donald life will be celebrated at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home 10505 Atlanta Highway Montgomery, AL Saturday July 5, 2025, with a visitation beginning at 11:00 AM and a graveside funeral service at Noon.
Donations to Conecuh Springs Christian School, 220 Hicks Industrial Park Road Union Springs, AL 36089 may be made in lieu of flowers.
