Dorothy LaMerle Smith, 73, of Pike Road, Alabama, entered her heavenly rest on November 24, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 27, 1952, in Franklin, Georgia, she was the daughter of Charles Rolan Coleman and Tommie Elizabeth Coleman.
On April 16, 1971, Dorothy married the love of her life, Charles Smith, Sr. Their marriage of more than fifty-four years was marked by love, faithfulness, and devotion. Together, they built a home filled with faith, warmth, laughter, and the steady presence of a wife and mother who made everyone feel loved.
Dorothy devoted her life to her family, especially to raising their three children—Katie, Charles, and Tori. A steadfast homemaker, she never missed a school program, practice, game, or milestone. She showed up—for her family, for her friends, and for anyone who needed a place to belong. In recent years, her home was filled with grandchildren who adored their Nana’s stories, affection, and laughter.
She had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen and valued. Known for her kindness, her love for laughter and adventure, and the fierce and loyal way she loved others, she built relationships that lasted a lifetime. Her influence stretched far beyond her home, touching more lives than she ever realized.
Above all, Dorothy was a Christian, and though she will be greatly missed, her family rejoices that she is no longer suffering and is in the presence of her Savior.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; her children, Katie (Scott), Charles (Ashley), and Tori (Neal); and her grandchildren: Cole, Cate, Ellie, Ella, Neely, Weslianne, Annie, Max, Susie, Everlie, Tommy, and Davy.
A funeral service will be held at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama, on Sunday, November 30. Visitation begins at 1 p.m., with the service to follow at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in honor of Dorothy’s lifelong love for children.
