Floyce Owen passed away at her Montgomery home on January 21, 2024 at the age of 90. Floyce was a beloved wife, devoted mother, and active member of her community. She was born in Butler County on August 13th, 1933 to William Mortimer Whiddon and Alice Elizabeth Jones. We can remember Floyce’s life thru 5 areas: faith, family, friends, food, and fun.
Floyce’s faith in God played a central role in her life and relationships. She was involved in Trinity Baptist Church before moving to the Bellehurst area and joining Eastmont Baptist Church where she and her husband, Ray, served faithfully for many years. Floyce was active in many aspects of church -- Sunday School classes and activities, greeting visitors, helping in Vacation Bible Study, and volunteering on Wednesday nights in the church kitchen. She will be remembered for her caring nature and willingness to help others as well as her love for God.
Her faith was intertwined with her love for her family. She was happily married to Jesse Ray Owen for 63 years until his passing in 2013. Family was one of Floyce’s favorite topics. It only took seconds of conversation before she proudly mentioned one of her children. She is survived by: son, Mickey Owen (Catherine Statam, Rose Statam); daughter, Anganel Owen; grandchildren, Leah Owen Blanks (Brian) and Matt Owen (Evey); and great-grandchildren, Claire Blanks and Ethan Owen; sister, Joyce Pierce; as well as many nieces and nephews. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Her unwavering love for her family extended to family friends as well as others she met. To the grandkids Floyce was Gigi. Others often called her “Grandma” or “Mama”. Floyce was a caring person that people could easily relate to. She had a genuine passion for making people feel better. She never met a stranger but was happy talking to someone, listening to their story, and encouraging them.
At Floyce’s home the kitchen was definitely the center of activity. Her kitchen was filled with the aroma of home-cooked meals or fresh baked goods. She took great pleasure in preparing special meals for her loved ones and friends creating memories around the dinner table especially for birthdays, holidays or special achievements.
In addition to retiring from the State Treasurer Department and working at the VA, Floyce enjoyed many hobbies. She and Ray were avid square dancers with the Rebs and Debs club for many years. Floyce also completed various needle work projects, worked with ceramics, sewed, played cards and read. Not afraid to tackle new things, Floyce created a stained glass picture in her early 80’s. She loved being busy and having fun. Her smile and laughter were infectious. Floyce is survived by numerous family members and friends whose lives have been forever touched by her thoughtfulness, caring, and generosity.
While we mourn our loss deeply, we also celebrate the legacy of love that Floyce leaves behind. We can find solace in knowing that she has left an indelible mark on our hearts which will continue to inspire us.
A service celebrating Floyce's life will take place on Sunday, January 28th at Eastmont Baptist Church on Atlanta Highway at 2:30 PM with visitation for family and friends beginning at 1:30 PM. Following the service will be a graveside ceremony at Alabama Heritage Cemetery located on Atlanta Highway in Montgomery.
