George Junior Dowdy of Hope Hull, Alabama passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 17, 2020. George was 88 years old, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. George was born in Milan, Georgia on October 22, 1931, the first of six children. He was preceded in death by his parents George Dowdy and Geneva Whitehead Dowdy, brother Jack Dowdy, sister Dollie Jacobs, daughter Kim Dowdy, and 2 great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Thelma Ellis Dowdy, and daughters Gerry Britton (Lance) and Teresa J. White of Montgomery, Alabama with 4 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren who referred to him as Papa; and sister Joyce Rowe (Edgar) of Willacoochee, Georgia, brother Henry Dowdy ( Sarah) of Ray City, Georgia, sister Bobbie Martin (Ray) of Eatonton, Georgia, son Sonny Dowdy (Geraldine) of Mystic, Georgia, daughter Yvonne “Pinky” von Hahmann of New Port Richey, Florida, and son Greg Dowdy (Margaret) of Irwinville, Georgia with 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren who referred to him as Grandpa George.
George entered into the Air Force in 1951 and retired honorably as a Master Sergeant in 1971.
On April 5, 1969 George married Thelma Ellis and celebrated 51 years of marriage. George retired from Winn Dixie where he was employed for 20 years. He then worked in his wood shop full time making toys and attending arts and crafts shows. He also had a lawn service that he ran with his grandsons. George enjoyed spending time with his family, working in the garden, and taking the grandchildren and great grandchildren fishing, hunting, and swimming, and going to the ballpark to watch them play ball.
Visitation services will be held this Friday at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm in the Magnolia Room at Alabama Heritage with graveside services to follow.
