OBITUARY

Gertrude Marie Stafford

September 30, 1929November 9, 2011

Stafford, Marie, born on September 30, 1929 and raised in Tallassee, Alabama, passed away on November 9, 2011 after a brief illness. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, James W. Stafford: children, Warren (Alice); Mark (Kelly); Lisa Stafford and Stephanie Ledbetter. Her son David preceded her in death. Marie leaves behind numerous beloved grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Marie satisfied her adventurous spirit by traveling the globe during her husband’s 25 year distinguished Air Force career. While building her family, Marie lived in 14 homes, in six states and Japan. After Stafford retired she continued to travel as a sponsor for many high school trips across America.

Marie valued education as the pathway to success. Raising five children, she earned her B.A. at Huntingdon College in 1968 while her husband served in the Vietnam War. Marie went on to earn her Masters degree and AA certification while teaching high school math at Lanier High School and Auburn University in Montgomery.

Marie invested herself in Montgomery by serving in numerous civic organizations including but not limited to the Exchange Club, Huntingdon College’s Alumni Board and the Republican Women’s Society. Additionally, she was committed to spreading the Gospel and supported many missionaries in their work.

When Marie became homebound, she cherished her visits by the members and staff of Dalraida Baptist Church and Evangel Temple. She had read through the entire Bible annually for over twenty-five years. Countless friends, many of whom she called each morning for the past forty years, cherished sharing crosswords and crypto-quotes.

Family will receive friends at 1PM Friday, November 11, at Alabama Heritage with a 2PM service to follow in the chapel,

I've always heard that there is one teacher in a lifetime that will be remembered forever....Mrs. Stafford was that teacher for me...she helped me in my struggles with class, and with life, all with that lovely smile and spirit. She also chaperoned a NYC trip that my class took, and was so wonderful. To Mrs. Staffords family...I know what her loss must feel like, as she was truly wonderful. I'm glad I was able to be in her life for a period of time. RIP, Mrs. Stafford. You are loved and will be missed.

Jim, Warren, Mark, Lisa and Stephanie we are sad to hear of Marie's passing. We are so greatful for the friendship, love of family and love of Christ that she shared with our family. Marie loved you all, and David, so very much and listening to her stories of you all and sharing Stephanie and Beth's school years together created a bond that would never be broken. Although she is not here in body, she lives on in your hearts and in the hearts of all those who knew her. There is joy in this sadness and that joy is that someday you will be reunited with her. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Your family has always been special to us. John, Ginger, Devin, Alexis and Brandon.

I knew Marie at Lanier High School. I did not have her as a teacher because I avoided math at all costs. I was student council president in 1972-73, and I interacted with her so much during that time. She was gracious, warm and gentle. We shared many laughs and experiences. When I lost my mother in 2000, she called to express her condolences, a gesture I will always remember. I later learned that David was her son, and he was a special guy as well. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I did not have the privilege of knowing Mrs. Stafford, but my thoughts and prayers go out to all the family during this trying times of their lives. I thank her especially for her Son Mark who over 22 years ago, as Dr. Stafford, tended my own Mother and she was able to live two more years beyond the expected.
