FUNDERBURK, Dr. Henry Hanly, Jr., 81, of Montgomery, AL, passed away August 4, 2012 following an extended illness. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Tim Thompson and Dr. John Ed Mathison officiating. Burial will be private. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Hanson Funderburk, daughter Debra Funderburk Cox (Al), son Kenneth Cliff Funderburk (Annette), and grandchildren Ashley Dahl Denney (Brad), Hanly Paul Funderburk and Wesley Reid Funderburk. Dr. Funderburk was born in Carrollton, AL in 1931, and grew up working on his grandparents’ farm. He attended Auburn University where he received agricultural degrees, and then served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant at Ft. Sill, OK and Ft. Hood, TX. After continuing his education at LSU attaining a PH.D in plant physiology, he returned to Auburn where he worked 30 years as a professor and researcher, dean, vice president, founding chancellor of the Montgomery campus, and president of Auburn University. He has fond memories of his 12 years spent at AUM, working with the original faculty and staff to build an institution from cotton fields in east Montgomery. He served 14 years as president of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY, where many lifelong friends were made. Dr. Funderburk enjoyed golfing and traveling with Helen and their many friends. He has been a member of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church since 1969. The family would like to thank special caregiver Mrs. Amelia Gorman for her excellent care and many kindnesses. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church, the Auburn University at Montgomery Scholarship Fund or Saint James School.
