My sincere condolences to the Funderburk family.  I worked at the EKU Libraries during his presidency at EKU and would meet him sometimes in passing on his walks and he always greeted me with a smile...

It was indeed a great professional experience to have worked for Dr. Funderburk during his entire time at EKU.  He was a true southern gentleman who always did his best for the faculty, staff and students during tough economic times. He was always supportive of me and my wife during his years in Kentucky.  We have lost a great educator. We send Mrs. Funderburk and her family our sympathy during this difficult time for them. May God be with all of the family.

Dr. Funderburk and Mrs. Funderburk always made our crew of boys feel like they were family. Not only was he book smart but he always knew when we were up to something. I always appreciate that he and Mrs. Funderburk welcomed us in their home and often fed the whole crew. I am so sorry we were not able to attend the services. Your family is in our prayers. I know from losing my Dad, I am comforted that he is no longer suffering.

I have fond memories of visiting Dr. Funderburk and Mrs. Funderburk in their EKU home.  Dr. Funderburk would call and ask me to come over to his home to resolve a technical problem with the TV set.  After the problem was resolved, sometimes Dr. Funderburk would invite me to sit down with them just to talk about whatever we wanted to talk about.  They were fine people and an asset to EKU.  My sympathies go out to the family.  May God comfort Mrs. Funderburk and the family.

I have many great memories relating to Dr. Funderburk's passion and support for the extended campus programs/centers that were developed, especially in Eastern Kentucky, during his tenure at EKU. Dr. Funderburk was a great man. His vision, dedication and leadership has had a tremendous impact on the lives of every person he came in contact with. He will be missed by those of us fortunate enough to have had the honor and pleasure to be associated with him.

I was a professor in Occupational Therapy and my husband taught in Emergency Medical Services at EKU. Both of us appreciated Dr. Funderburk. As a result of his careful stewardship, EKU thrived in a time when other Kentucky institutions did not. We both noticed his habit of walking the entire campus at the end of each work day. He really kept up with everything. We could expect him to walk through the parking lot at the Dizney Bldg about 5:00 p.m. My husband taught the EMTs and Paramedic students a course in which they learned to use the "Jaws of LIfe" to rescue people in car crashes. Part of the class involved having a wrecked vehicle delivered to the Dizney lot on Friday afternoon so that the students could actually use the "Jaws of LIfe" the following Sat. morning. As Dr. Funderburk waked through the lot late one Friday, he saw the wrecked car. He called Public Safety as soon as he got home and gave an order to get that mess out of the Dizney parking lot at once. When the students showed up Sat., there was no car! My husband called Public Safety to see what happened and was told that President Funderburk had it removed. Class was rescheduled for the following Sat. I told my husband that he would have to call the President's Office from then on and remind them to tell Dr. Funderburk that the wreck in the Dizney lot would be used on Sat in the "Jaws of LIfe" training session. He did just that, and from then on the class went off without a hitch.
We know that this is a sad time for his family. We send prayers for comfort to Mrs. Funderburk and his family.

It was a pleasure knowing and serving Mr. Funderburk as a custodian. He was a very good President. May God be with his wife and family through this time of sorrow, I know he will be missed.

Dr. Funderburk was one of the most able presidents of EKU I have ever known. I was hired while he was president and witnessed expansions of all kinds, enrollment growth, and making a way out of the no money years! He was a great leader.

You have my sympathies for the loss. In my culture, we call the death of a loved one a Celebration, after a long life of service. We say, he was called  home to his just rewards.

Dr. Funderburk was a truly remarkable man whose honor and integrity set a high standard for everyone privileged to know him.  May his memory be eternal.

My sincere condolence to Helen and family.  I shared many fun golfing moments with Hanley, and I will miss him.  Now he is playing golf on the best courses.
