
Henry Clyde Johnson, Jr. passed away at the age of 86 on April 19, 2022. He was born in Tennessee to Henry Clyde Johnson, Sr. and Hilda Kay Spoon Johnson and grew up in the middle South. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, qualifying for the G.I. Bill and earning B.A. and M.A. degrees in English. His four-decade career in federal government and higher education included jobs at Duke University, the College of William and Mary, and the Library of Congress. He retired in late 2000 and moved with his wife Gwendolyn to sunny Montgomery, Alabama, where he enjoyed reading, writing, and relaxing in the company of many cats.
He and Gwendolyn were married for 62 years and have five children: Marian Stewart (husband Tom), Pamela Johnson, Karen Draggoo (husband Myrl), Jennifer Johnson, and Henry Johnson (husband Gary). He has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Gary Johnson, and sister, Phyllis Halvorsen (husband Randy).
He is preceded in death by cats Kiki, Rumples, Ivan, Victor, and Tom, all of whom he believed would be waiting for him in heaven, and he requested that any memorial contributions be made to the Montgomery Humane Society, 1150 John Overton Drive, Montgomery, Alabama 36110.
