

James Curtis “Curly” Stephens, 83, a long-time resident of Montgomery, Alabama, and recently of Lake Jordan, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, following a long illness. He was surrounded by his loved ones at the time of his passing.
Born August 15, 1942, in Troy, Alabama, to the late Joe C. and Margaret Renfroe Stephens, James was a man defined by dedication and service. A talented civil engineer, he enjoyed a distinguished career with the Alabama Department of Transportation (formerly the Highway Department), retiring in September 1998 from the 6th Division Maintenance Bureau. James also proudly served his country as a Master Sergeant in the Air National Guard’s 187th Civil Engineering Squadron. His exemplary service was recognized with both the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal.
A true engineer at heart, James was never happier than when he was building with his hands—whether tackling home renovations, crafting furniture, or diving into mechanical projects. He was a passionate fan of softball, Alabama football, and steeplechase racing. Above all, he will be fondly remembered by his family for his unconventional and memorable gifts—unique tokens of love they will forever hold in their hearts.
James is survived by his wife, Linda, of Montgomery, AL; his sons, Steve Stephens (Meggan) of Pell City, AL Travis Stephens (Christy) of Pelham, AL and Wesley Stephens (Misty) of Helena, AL; and his daughters, Laura Bowers (Chad) of Pelham, AL and Lindsey Andrews (Adam) of Silverthorne, CO. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Stephenson (Bobby) of Montgomery, AL; eleven grandchildren, Ashley Underwood (Tyler), Travis Stephens, Joshua Stephens, Tya McCombs (Will), Bailey Stephens, Molly Johnson (Cooper), Noah Stephens, Tyler Stephens, Bella Stephens, Baker Stephens, and Skyler Floyd; and seven beloved great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his older sister, Dorothy Simms; his younger brother, David Stephens; and his younger sister, Deanna Lee.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Church of the Highlands – Riverchase Campus – Pelham, AL on Friday May 1 at 10:00 AM with Visitation to follow.
