John David Rivenbark, 52, fell asleep with the Lord on early Wednesday morning May 9, 2018. After a valiant six-year battle with colon and pancreatic cancer, John passed away in the comfort of his home and the arms of his devoted wife. John was born September 8, 1965 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to his parents Stan and Virginia Rivenbark, the second son of their four children.

After graduating from high school, John spent an incredible eight-year career in the Army serving in military intelligence. During this time, he had the opportunity to travel all over the world as well as witness key historical events and meet presidents, diplomats, and foreign leaders.

Following his success in the military, John pursued ministry and business, eventually climbing his way to the C-Suite of several companies in Atlanta, Georgia. He went on to pursue his Bachelors and Masters of Arts in Religious Studies at Georgia State University. In 2008 he began his near ten-year career at the Department of Veterans Affairs, a position he continued even after being diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2012 and Stage IV pancreatic cancer in 2016.

John will be remembered for not only for his honorable service in the military and his success in the business world, but also for his prodigious intellect, his insatiable appetite for knowledge and reading, his unforgettable sense of humor, and his unfailing generosity. A devoted follower of Christ, John will also be remembered for his spiritual leadership and his living proclamation of the Gospel, most recently at Christchurch Montgomery of which he was a faithful and beloved member.

I worked for John at Atlanta VA. He was my Coach during my dad's final illness and subsequent death. John was always understanding and compassionate. Later when I was a new Coach and he made a special point of coming by and offering some much needed advice and encouragement.

I made the ceremony at Georgia National Cemetery, when my surgery was done early and I was able to get there on time. It is always moving to be there for military honors and the service was excellent.

John was a great boss and a good friend and I am sorry he is gone.
