

Dr. Scanlan was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Maurice and Mildred Scanlan on October 14th, 1936. He attended Flaget High School in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Scanlan attended the University of Louisville graduating in 1958 and went on to the University Of Louisville Medical School graduating in 1962. He married Maurite Raque on September 22, 1962 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and service in the Army. Dr. Scanlan practiced Ophthalmology in Montgomery, Alabama for over 30 years. He served on the Board for the Montgomery Symphony and Montgomery Chorale. He always had a passion for the arts particularly opera. Dr. Scanlan supported both the Metropolitan Opera and the Atlanta Opera and locally he was involved with the Vann Vocal Institute. He was a member of the American Native Fish Association and the American Killifish Association. Dr. Scanlan was a lifelong organic gardener and supporter of environmental organizations including Lake Watch and Alabama Rivers Alliance. Both Joe and Maurite were active in the Pike Road community and enjoyed traveling and experiencing different cultures and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Dr. Scanlan is survived by his wife, Maurite Scanlan and their three children, Jeanine (David) Hughes, Greg (Mary Anne) Scanlan and John (Sharon) Scanlan, grandchildren, Justin (Grace) Hughes, Brandon (Abby) Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Haley (Blake) Rogers and Luke Scanlan and great grandchildren, Luke and Wyatt Rogers and Bryce Hughes. He is also survived by his brothers Robert (Shirley) Scanlan, James (Sharon) Scanlan, Donald (Linda) Scanlan and sister Mary Ann Wilson.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Friday, March 21, 2025 at Holy Spirit Parish, 8570 Vaughn Road Montgomery, AL 36117 with a Memorial Mass to be held at 11:00 AM. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.
