Joyce Wilson Stewart
September 13, 1934 – July 20, 2020
Stewart, Joyce Wilson, 85, a longtime resident of Montgomery, died peacefully on July 20, 2020 from complications of COVID – 19. She was diagnosed years ago with dementia which took from her the memories of her family but didn’t take her sweet smile or kind words to her caregivers. Joyce was born in Crenshaw County, Alabama on September 13, 1934. She graduated from Luverne High School and received her BS from Troy State College. Joyce taught school during four decades and had many wonderful experiences. She would reminisce about her students and wondered how their lives evolved. She retired in May 1997.
She volunteered for several years at Baptist Medical Center – East. Joyce felt it was her way of giving back in a meaning way. Her favorite assignment was the Information Desk where she had the opportunity to deliver gifts and flowers.
Joyce was a lifelong Methodist attending Glenwood United Methodist Church in her youth, First United Methodist Church of Troy as a young parent and Frazer United Methodist Church of Montgomery in her later years. She was active at church until her dementia made attending church difficult so she began following the television ministry.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents James Eska and Ethel Irene Wilson and her beloved dog Clementine who she rescued from Montgomery Humane Shelter. Mom loved her from 10/2004 – 07/2018. Joyce is survived by her three children, Lester (Les) D. Stewart, Jr. and his wife Terri, Segada, Philippines, James C. (Chris) Stewart and his wife Kim, and Stella I. Stewart. Four grandchildren: Ann Stewart Casella and her husband Mark; Kingsport, TN, Kelly L. Stewart, Birmingham, AL; Saxon O. Alexander and Madison Bierman, Hoover, AL and Sarah E. Alexander, Baton Rouge, LA. Great-grandchildren, Emmett and Henry Casella. Sisters and brothers-in-law Nedra W. and Charles Horn, and Seretha W. and Wayne Curtis, long-time friends and neighbors, Pat and Tom Bush, and special friend Barbara J. Williams. Joyce loved them all so much.
The family would like to thank the staff at Capitol Hill Healthcare and Kindred Hospice for their excellent care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Montgomery Humane Shelter, 1150 John Overton Drive, Montgomery, AL 36110, the Troy Animal Rescue Project, 34 County Road 2266, Brundidge, AL 36010 or to Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org. A graveside service will be held Friday, July 24, 2020 at 10:00 am at New Providence Cemetery, Glenwood, AL with Pastor Darryl Roberts officiating.
