

Martha Ann Hatcher Hughes passed away June 18 , 2026 in Montgomery, AL. Born November 2, 1936 in Baker County, GA she is survived by her husband, William Daniel (Speck) Hughes, her daughter Bonnie Hughes Macdonald, sons William Daniel Hughes, Jr (Michelle) and David Bowen Hughes (Kiki), sisters Nancy Van Etten (Chuck), Brenda Dunning and Sue Krueger and her grandchildren Grace Macdonald (Jordan Faeghi), Heather Macdonald (Sunhyoung Kim), William Daniel Hughes, III (Analise), Benton Connell Hughes (Mollie), Victoria Hughes Halcomb (Ryan) and Russell Bowen Hughes (Hailey). She is also survived by two great grandsons-William Daniel " Ford " Hughes, IV and Harrison Clarke Faeghi and many nieces and nephews, all of which knew her as " Mafa " .
After graduating from nursing school in Columbus , GA Mafa entered the field of health care working with Dr Jack Hughston and soon met Speck , who was interning in Columbus. They married in 1960 and after he completed his residency in Birmingham, moved to Montgomery in 1963 . Mafa was active in Montgomery civic and social life , including chairing the YWCO and leadership roles in the Montgomery, State of Alabama and Southeastern Medical Auxiliaries. She and Speck enjoyed traveling and saw much of the world together.
An avid entertainer, she enjoyed hosting events , dinners and parties and her wit and charm made for many an unforgettable evening for all. She made friends easily and allies naturally. Mafa loved to live, see, learn and love. She will be missed but never forgotten.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home 10505 Atlanta Highway Montgomery, AL 36117. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 AM on Thursday and will visit until the beginning of the service.
