

Martha Sue Thornton Akers, age 79, left this world on Monday, March 6, 2017, to stroll the streets of heaven with her beloved husband of 50 years, Lonnie D. Akers. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at 2:00 PM, at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Les Snodgrass officiating and internment will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Alabama Heritage from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 and one hour prior to service on Thursday. She is preceded in death by her husband Lonnie D. Akers, parents Charlie Thornton and Floryce Thornton, her sister, Ray Nell Thornton Taunton, and her brother, Joe Lee Thornton. She is survived by her two daughters, Vicki Herrin (Scott) of Montgomery and Dr. Linda Blevins (Dr. Greg Fiechtner) of Germantown, Maryland, and her grandson, Brandon Herrin of Montgomery. She made a home for her family around the world for 22 years while her husband served in the United States Air Force. They enjoyed bowling together and loved traveling around watching their grandson Brandon in his various activities. She spent many years in Civil Service and retired from the VA hospital. She was a 25 year cancer survivor and enjoyed getting together with her classmates from Elmore County High School, Class of '55.
