Nikki Lee Starkey, 72, of Montgomery, Alabama, formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on June 23, 2026. Born August 31, 1953, Nikki will be remembered as a cherished and beloved presence in the lives of all who knew her.
Nikki had a deep love for dogs, and she and her husband made it a priority to adopt from the shelter—an enduring reflection of the care she so naturally extended to those around her. She also found great enjoyment in classic films, British television shows, and science-fiction novels; her knowledge and recall of actors and plot lines was legendary.
Nikki’s days were enriched by a lively social life and the friendships she nurtured with devotion and joy. She spent meaningful time with her friend groups, often gathering in one another’s homes, sharing conversation, and enjoying brunch together. Over the past ten years, many of Nikki’s friendships blossomed through her time at the YMCA at Peppertree. When Nikki went to the gym to walk, she was rarely alone for long—there was always a familiar face to join her, and as one friend headed out, another would be there to continue the companionship that meant so much to her.
Everyone who knew Nikki realized instantly she had a keen mind, in particular as it related to math and technology. She utilized her B.S. in Mathematics in her career building databases for clients at the highest levels of government, while also acting as tech support for numerous friends and family. Many, especially her husband, would have been lost without her.
Nikki was preceded in death by her father, Verl Smith; her mother, Irene Smith; and three beloved dogs, Solomon, Shadow, and Scotch.
Nikki is survived by her loving husband, Tom Starkey; sister, Jana Lange (Fred); nephew, Patrick Lange; two grand-nephews, Teddy and Archie; as well as her dog, Soda; and the many friends she has made.
