Norma Jean Prater, age 82 of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018. She was born in Tennessee on February 11, 1936 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Prater. Norma was a faithful member of Whitfield United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and served on the Whitfield Kindergarten Board. She was a graduate of the University of Alabama with her bachelor’s degree in education and obtained her master’s degree in education from Florida State University. Norma was a beloved teacher at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery Public Schools, and finished her career at Auburn University of Montgomery. When she wasn’t teaching the youth that she adored, she loved spending her time traveling the United States.
Norma is preceded in death by her parents, Phillip Frederick Wallace Prater and Lucille Edith Prater; and her brother-in-laws, Billy Hill and Sam Barfield. She is survived by her dear sister, Anne Prater Hill Barfield, and many extended relatives and friends. Norma was dearly loved by anyone that encountered her, she was a dear friend to many, and a light to many others. Her joy filled the room as she entered.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 7, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Whitfield United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Norma’s Life will begin at 2:00 pm at Whitfield United Methodist Church. Burial will immediately follow at Alabama Heritage Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whitfield United Methodist Church.
