Ronald Eugene Johnston, affectionately known as Gene or Geno, passed away peacefully on March 9th, 2023 after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by friends and family.
Gene worked as a Service Mechanic with Alagasco for 31 years and retired in 1997. He was a member of Frazer Church for many years and served as an usher until he got sick and could no longer serve. He loved sports of all kinds, was a lifelong Alabama Crimson Tide fan, and loved college football, softball, and golf. He was always the happiest when he was at the lake or the beach, and loved a great steak, a seafood platter, and ice cream. He was a warm and wonderful man with a quick wit and a great sense of humor. He was a silver-haired devil who was loved by everyone he touched.
Gene was born in Montgomery, AL on November 7th, 1935. He was preceded in death by his daughter Valarie Jean Johnston, father Ernest Johnston, mother Flora Boatner, sister Patricia Ayres, his beloved Aunt Ditt, and the mother of his children, Shirley Fowler. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Lisa. He is also survived by his children whom he loved dearly – daughters Kim Pruitt and Paula (Greg) Beidleman, and sons Ronnie Johnston and Jay (Tiffani) Hudgins. He is also survived by grandchildren Chris (Jennifer) Moseley, Sydni (Dan) Stegmaier, Greg (Erin) Beidleman Jr., Chelsea, Zach, and Lillie Johnston, and Jonathan Hudgins, as well as several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is also greatly missed by his fur baby, Harlie Cat.
He did not want any formal services. Instead he requested that his earthly body be cremated and his ashes scattered at the beach, the lake, the golf course, the softball field, and a few other special places and his wishes will be honored by his family.
His family is so thankful for the tender loving care that was given to him by Gentiva Hospice, especially Jennifer Mackenzie who loved him and understood him so well.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Frazer Church, 6000 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery AL 36117, or the charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.AlabamaHeritageFH.com for the Johnston family.
