Suda SaeBae Carey passed away peacefully in her home on the evening of December 27, 2017. The family will gather for a private remembrance on Saturday, December 30th. She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Donald Ray Carey; her four children and their spouses, Katherine Lynn (Freddie, Jr.), Martin Carey (Brigiete), Sabrina Kim Tew (Gary), and Brian Carey (Laurie); and her grandchildren, Sabrina, Tyler and Lucas Lynn; Jonathyn and Grace Carey; Amber Whittaker (Shawn) and Joshua Norrell; Maxwell Carey and numerous family members in the US and in Asia.
She was born in Bangkok, Thailand, as one of twelve children. She worked at Oriental Jewelers and it was there that she met the love of her life, Donald Carey. They were married on June 24, 1963. They moved to the US soon after and started their family. They eventually settled in Wetumpka, AL , where Suda began her second career (her first career was a stay-at-home mom) as a small business owner of Carey Corporation whose business endeavors included several drycleaners and laundromats (Quik-Clean and Carey’s Cleaners) in Montgomery. Her desire was always to provide personal, friendly service with genuine generosity towards all who came through the doors. After selling the drycleaners and a short retirement, she and Don purchased a trophy shop in 2000 which became We-2 Gifts and Awards in downtown Wetumpka. One of her favorite activities in downtown Wetumpka during the Christmas season was the local business open house and Live Nativity where she served her infamous “Chinese buns”. She and Don closed the trophy shop in 2014 so that they could spend more of their time traveling and with family and friends.
Throughout the years, Suda and her family enjoyed traveling throughout North America and abroad to Europe and Asia. Their favorites were cross country road trips with their children and grandchildren where they shared many adventures and Grandma’s “talking stories” and visited many places including Boston, the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Pike’s Peak, Niagara Falls, Chicago, Florida and Ohio to visit “Papa’s Homeplace”. She and Don celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a “trip of a lifetime” to Thailand with all of their children, their children’s spouses, and all of the grandchildren except one granddaughter, who shortly followed with an eighteen-month long mission in Thailand. The trip reunited and introduced extended family from both sides of the world for a happy celebration.
In addition to being a hardworking, self-employed business owner, she was also devoted to her church and served on many committees but most loved being with the little ones in the nursery, teaching in the Sunday School and serving on the flower committee. She was generous and kind with a very loving and selfless heart, always thinking of others in her family, her community and her church. Those wishing to share memories with the family may send them to [email protected].
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1617 Perry Hill Road, Montgomery, AL, 36106.
