Garrett was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and friend who left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His humor knew no bounds, and he loved nothing more than joking around and sharing a good laugh with family and friends. Garrett never met a stranger and seemed to collect friends wherever he went, many of whom cherished their time spent in his company. He was a man who said what he meant and meant what he said; while his words could sometimes be wonderfully blunt, they were never intended to offend. If something was broken, Garrett was sure he could fix it, usually with a healthy dose of what he proudly believed to be good old Cajun ingenuity. He loved to socialize, especially when it involved good friends, good drinks, and a good old-fashioned “social hour.” Over the years, Garrett answered to more nicknames than most people could keep track of, including 9 Finger Pawpaw, Chicken Paw Paw, and Booboo, but perhaps Lu and Top were the names most widely known. Above all, Garrett was a one-of-a-kind character whose laughter, friendship, generosity, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his beautiful memory is his wife of 55 years, Brenda Topham; six children, Terri Grow (Wiltz), Robin Aucoin (Darrell), Dawn Gros (Jeff), Shannon Topham (Gregory Baker), Garrett "Gabe" Topham III, and Casey Topham (Darin Hebert), 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved best friend and fur baby, Presley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garrett Topham Sr. and Ellen Topham; his three sisters, Rayola "Tut" Theriot, Barbara Topham and Baby Victoria Topham; his father-in-law, Master Sergeant Ernest LaCoste and his mother-in-law, Rita LaCoste.
A time of visitation and remembrance will be held for Garrett on Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 10am until 1pm at Hargrave Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held privately by the family at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hargrave Funeral Home of Morgan City, Louisiana.
